Pâtisserie française = la patience

As we continue to learn French and study the French culture, we have been baking French pastries!  We recently made profiteroles or chou à la crème and then tried croissants - délicieux!!!! Both pastries are delicate and require following directions very closely for best results.

In just the past couple of years have I attempted working with yeast as some recipes take hours or days to work with. Croissants is a 3-day process, so it takes much patience and perseverance until you reach the baked ending :) After attempting to make croissants, I can understand why we do not see any baking classes for croissants. The class would need to several days to go through the whole process. In the end, the croissants are worth waiting three days for. Our croissants for the first try turned out buttery, light, flaky, with a crusty exterior and a soft interior, scrumptious indeed. We know where we need to work to make them better, it was a learning process in baking them and in patience!!!

Our friends never know what type of yummy treat they are in for when they pop in :)

Patience is a virtue and talked about throughout the Bible in the Old and New Testaments. According to 1 Samuel "lack of patience can cause you to miss blessings".
Here is a FUN little song as children practice patience:

"But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."  Isaiah 40:31

Urban Farmers

Greetings All!

This is an encouraging blog post for those considering becoming urban farmers.  Wondering if it is a growing trend or more of a desire for organic and knowing our food source?  Either way, I never thought that we would have a "mini farm"!  I always enjoyed gardening from the time I was young, a passion my Dad instilled in me and we are instilling in our children, but chickens!   We hear more and more people we know having chickens.  Who knew?

This past Spring my husband visited Tractor Supply to purchase supplies for our pets and encouraged, begged, and pleaded the kids to go along with him.  Well, they had baby chicks in the store which the kids fell in love with.  So after a week or two of determination, perseverance and research they returned to the store for a half dozen baby chicks!

We believe that having animals teaches compassion and responsibility.  The baby chicks were so adorable, but that time is fleeting, only about a week or so long and then they begin looking like chickens.  Finding the chickens sweet and lovely, and each having their own personality, they were named accordingly.  Our kids helped construct a chicken run, which is  large enough until we build a chicken coop.

The girls began laying eggs around mid-July and now we are receiving about 4 a day from the little ladies :)  Several times a day our children go searching for the eggs, it's like a treasure hunt!  And, the kids sold their first dozen yesterday - so exciting!!!!  We are also teaching the kids economics and to be entrepreneurs.

Sure letting the chickens free range, they have tilled some grass and garden for us, but we do not mind.....The children adore them and their friends enjoy visiting to see and feed our chickens.  The chickens bring much JOY to our household.  Please be encouraged if you are considering getting a few of your own.  The kids would love to share their experience and knowledge with you, our youngest has already given advice about broody hens!  If nothing else, chickens are a wonderful science project, fun pets and wonderful for teaching responsibility!!!
