Urban Farmers

Greetings All!

This is an encouraging blog post for those considering becoming urban farmers.  Wondering if it is a growing trend or more of a desire for organic and knowing our food source?  Either way, I never thought that we would have a "mini farm"!  I always enjoyed gardening from the time I was young, a passion my Dad instilled in me and we are instilling in our children, but chickens!   We hear more and more people we know having chickens.  Who knew?

This past Spring my husband visited Tractor Supply to purchase supplies for our pets and encouraged, begged, and pleaded the kids to go along with him.  Well, they had baby chicks in the store which the kids fell in love with.  So after a week or two of determination, perseverance and research they returned to the store for a half dozen baby chicks!

We believe that having animals teaches compassion and responsibility.  The baby chicks were so adorable, but that time is fleeting, only about a week or so long and then they begin looking like chickens.  Finding the chickens sweet and lovely, and each having their own personality, they were named accordingly.  Our kids helped construct a chicken run, which is  large enough until we build a chicken coop.

The girls began laying eggs around mid-July and now we are receiving about 4 a day from the little ladies :)  Several times a day our children go searching for the eggs, it's like a treasure hunt!  And, the kids sold their first dozen yesterday - so exciting!!!!  We are also teaching the kids economics and to be entrepreneurs.

Sure letting the chickens free range, they have tilled some grass and garden for us, but we do not mind.....The children adore them and their friends enjoy visiting to see and feed our chickens.  The chickens bring much JOY to our household.  Please be encouraged if you are considering getting a few of your own.  The kids would love to share their experience and knowledge with you, our youngest has already given advice about broody hens!  If nothing else, chickens are a wonderful science project, fun pets and wonderful for teaching responsibility!!!

Firm Foundation!

This Old House that we own has much work to be done on it and not much available time and resources to devote.  My husband is always busy working or serving others so the house gets neglected at times.  Our roof needs to be done, the exterior paint has peeled to the bare wood.  I decided to visit Home Depot yesterday and they recommended oil-based Kilz to use to maintain the paint adhering to our wood siding.  The kids and I began scraping yesterday and found some rotten planks, so I contacted our Historical Society, because yes, we have a historical home!  I received a message back with such encouraging words, I am overjoyed at just the possibility of their assistance!!!  The President mentioned they may begin awarding grants to owners of historical homes.  Continuing to pray for our house to be on solid rock and firm foundation!!!!!!

Storms are inevitable, when the storms arise, do you come out on top?

My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.

God is working and moving for those who are faithful!  I hope this has been encouraging, God listens and knows our heart, we just need to persevere through the storm!!!

"Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”  Matthew 7:24-27

"My Fair Lady"

Dear Friends!

We are excited to visit Playhouse Square for this wonderful production!  Please join us!!!

When the opinionated linguistics professor and bachelor Henry Higgins wagers that he can convert a lowly Cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle into a lady of high society, he never bargains for the unexpected transformation that she will evoke within him. Featuring such enduring Broadway favorites as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “The Rain in Spain,” “On the Street Where You Live” and “Get Me to the Church on Time,” this acclaimed musical is a joyful classic that the entire family will enjoy.
